The IWR is an interdisciplinary research center for Scientific Computing which builds bridges across disciplines. It promotes mathematical and computational methods in science, engineering and the humanitites. Currently the IWR comprises more than 50 research teams from various faculties. Around 600 scientists work together in interdisciplinary cooperation projects. In addition to educating the next generation of excellent scientists the IWR also focuses on advacing international research networks.

Preventing Back Pain with Robots - IWR researchers participating in EU exoskeleton project
"...Using robotic assistance to prevent or mitigate back pain – that is the goal of a new European research project whose members include researchers from the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) of Heidelberg University. Inauguration of the Mathematikon
Mathematicians and computer specialists will be doing their research and teaching concentrated at one location next year: The Mathematikon. Part A of the building was inaugurated on Friday, 11th December 2015. Gerda Tschira, representing the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, presented part A of the building to Heidelberg University and thus to the state of Baden-Wüttemberg, welcoming also Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, Theresia Bauer.

The Future Courtroom Workshop “Gerichtssaal der Zukunft”- Introducing 3D Criminology and Forensic Science.
Unmanned aerial vehicles, laser scanners and radiological methods: the future is now. Funded by the Institutional Strategy of Heidelberg University, the future courtroom workshop was an absolutely unique, interdisciplinary cooperation of Prof. Dr. Yen from the Institute of Forensic and Traffic Medicine, the German Cancer Research Centre and Dr. Mara from the IWR, presenting the most progressive and innovative scientific and computational techniques in criminology and forensic science.

Visualization and Numerical Geometry Group Participates in TV Documentary
IWR Member Dr. Susanne Krömker and her team participated in a documentary of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) on “Cemeteries in the Southwest“. They showcased their research and demonstrated how 3D scanning techniques are used for the digitization of inscriptions of medieval gravestones at the Jewish cemetery in Worms.

Award for Paper on Simulation of Flow Processes - SIAM Society honours research publication in the field of applied mathematics
„With one of the highest possible awards in the field of applied mathematics the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has honoured the authors of a paper on computer-supported simulation of flow processes that appeared last year in one of the society’s five journals. Among the SIAM publications the Heidelberg paper was chosen as the one with outstanding research results of special overall significance. The basic work was conducted at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) of Heidelberg University and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) in cooperation with French researchers. SIAM recognises only one publication each year as part of the SIGEST programme…“

Kathrin Hatz receives best presentation award at the 5th ECCOMAS PhD Olympiad
Former HGS MathComp Fellow Kathrin Hatz has been selected to receive the best presentation award at the 5th ECCOMAS PhD Olympiad. Kathrin was nominated by the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) to attend this event.
The European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) was founded in 1993. ECCOMAS is a scientific organization grouping together European associations with interests in the development and applications of computational methods in science and technology. The 5th ECCOMAS PhD Olympiad was hosted by the 3rd ECCOMAS Young Investigators Conference (YIC 2015) in July 2015.
Kathrin presented her PhD thesis "Efficient numerical methods for hierarchical dynamic optimization with application to cerebral palsy gait modeling“.

Kathrin Hatz awarded 2015 Dr.-Körper-Preis
Former HGS MathComp Fellow Kathrin Hatz has been selected by the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) to receive the 2015 Dr.-Körper-Preis for her PhD thesis "Efficient numerical methods for hierarchical dynamic optimization with application to cerebral palsy gait modeling". The Dr.-Körper-Preis honors excellent dissertations in applied mathematics and mechanics.

Three IWR Members Appointed Fellows at Marsilius Kolleg

Winterschule und Wissenschaftlertreffen - Veranstaltung an der Universität Heidelberg zu computergestützten Modellen chemischer Reaktionsabläufe
"...Computergestützte Modelle chemischer Reaktionsabläufe – insbesondere in biologischen Systemen – stehen im Fokus eines einwöchigen Wissenschaftlertreffens an der Universität Heidelberg, das sich an Fachwissenschaftler aus Deutschland, Indien und Japan richtet. Vom 17. bis 22. Februar 2015 treffen sich 20 Doktoranden aus Deutschland und Indien zur „Winter School on Modeling of Chemical and Biological Reactivity“ (MCBR). Zudem findet vom 23. bis 25. Februar zum vierten Mal ein MCBR-Treffen mit Wissenschaftlern aus Deutschland und Indien statt, an dem erstmals auch Kollegen aus Japan teilnehmen, um ein deutsch-indisch-japanisches Netzwerk in diesem Fachbereich aufzubauen. An diesem Treffen von mehr als 20 Wissenschaftlern nehmen auch die Doktoranden der Winterschule teil. Ausgerichtet werden beide Veranstaltungen vom Anorganisch-Chemischen Institut und dem Interdisziplinären Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR) der Universität Heidelberg..."
