Practical april/ may 2013

My name is Jana and I finished school at Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule in Heidelberg last year.

I would like to start studying maths this winter semester in Heidelberg, so I got the possibility to complete a four-week internship at IWR.

Here you can read, what I did while my practical. Have fun!

1st week

The first day my contact person Dr. Winckler presented my topic to me, the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). He also gave me a introduction about the Theory of Graphs and a summary about my exercises for the next weeks.

The next days I read a lot about my subjects because I participated in the "Schülersymposium" the 7th of may in Heidelberg. For that I prepared a poster about theory of graphs, the TSP and the Target Visitation Problem (TVP) while the practical.

That week I also visited two lectures, one about Ordinary Differential Equations and the other about Algorithm and Data Structures.

2nd week

That week I read a lot about the mathematical description of TSP and TVP and I tried to summarise these complex topics in my own words. Furthermore Mrs Kluge told me how to work with Typo3, the system which operates the website of IWR. Afterwards I started designing my own page about the practical.

I visited some lectures that week again: Elemental Theory of Numbers, introduction into Numerics and Algorithm and Data Structures.

3rd week

This week I prepared my poster for the "Schülersymposium". It contains the topics graph problems, minimal spanning tree, shortest dintance, travelling salesman problem, TSP as a linear program and the target visitation problem.

Because of that I spent a lot of time reading and also sitting in front of the computer to design the poster which is 841 x 1189 millimeter tall. I also had some meetings with Achim Hildenbrandt, who is researching for his dissertation about the Target Visitation Problem. He gave me some hints about the content of my poster.

4th week

In my last week of the practical already was the "Schülersymposium". On monday i finished my poster and printed it, two exemplares of them were also put up in the IWR.

The tuesday i spent at the centre of communications DKFZ. I heard some speeches, one for example of Dr. Steffen Geis about "New virus - a danger for tomorrow" and also 9 presentations about the different projects of other students. All of the other projects were presented to a Jury. There were also some interested guests, who visited my poster.

The rest of the week I continued working on the website for the homepage and I visited another lecture about the introduction into Numerics.
